Flora & Fauna
Lesotho’s flora and fauna
We are known for our stunning landscapes, high mountains, and diverse flora and fauna. Here are some examples of the beautiful and medicinal flora and fauna found in Lesotho:
Lekhala Kharetsa (Lesotho spiral aloe)
The national flower of Lesotho, Lekhala Kharetsa, is renowned for its captivating beauty and valuable medicinal properties. Thriving in the high mountainous regions, this plant holds a special place as a protected species and plays an essential role in Basotho culture and traditions.
Mmorobei (Lesotho Rosehip)
The oil extracted from Lesotho Rosehip is renowned for its skin-nourishing properties. It is effective in combating photo-ageing, enhancing skin hydration, and diminishing the visibility of fine lines, pigmentation, and scars. It can be found randomly scattered across the country but particularly thrives in our highlands.
Night Phlox
The Zuluzianskya Rubrostella is a species of flowering plant native to Lesotho and Kwazulu Natal (South Africa). The Night Phlox only grows at around 2400 to 3000 metres around Sea Level. It can be seen near the Letseng Diamond Mine which is in the Drankensberg Alpine Centre. The plant is named the Night Phlox because it only flowers in the evening around 7pm.
