Starting a business in Lesotho

With the one stop Business facilitation centre, starting a business in Lesotho has never been easier. The OBFC is a full service point through which one can register and licence their business easily and online. This is just one of the ways in which we are committed to upgrading the ease of doing business in the country. The services are linked to Revenue Services Lesotho making it a seamless integration for businesses to also register for tax on the same platform.


Power

Hydroelectric Power

Through the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, Lesotho generates water for Gauteng, a province in neighbouring South Africa as well as hydroelectric power for Lesotho. The project, established in 1986 by a bilateral treaty between Lesotho and South Africa. By harnessing the water of the Senqu river in the highlands of Lesotho through the construction of a series of dams. There are currently five dams planned as part of the LHWP in a phased approach. Currently the Muela hydroelectric station has a capacity of 72MW and produces electricity for Lesotho’s domestic needs. Phase II of the LHWP is currently under way in Polihali with the construction of the Polihali dam and transfer tunnel. Read more about the LHWP here.

A combination of our high altitude and winds positions us with the best climate in the world for the harvesting of Medicinal cannabis. The rugged terrain of the Lesotho highlands offer a ripe landscape for different strains of cannabis to flourish.

The country legalised the harvesting of cannabis for medicinal use in 2017 and since then companies have taken advantage of the change in legislation to export high grade medicinal cannabis to countries in Europe.
